中秋节快乐!

Time fly and so fast, one year gone. What did you do during last year's Mid Autumn's Festival? Eating mooncake, drinking tea and playing lantern just like yesterday year? What have you done this year?

Last year no moon at sight, but this year we saw pretty moon at sky. When time past, things do change.

"It's Jelly mooncake with red dragon fruit filling and coconut cream." She explained.

"Looks delicious and pretty too! You know who made it?"

"Yup, its from the hand of Sharon. She has all the patient to make those. And I bet she is very creative too!" She was very proud.

"Hehehe... Do you ever ask her to teach you?" I teased her.

"Wanna buy? Although it is her hobby and she learn that for her kids, but she do sell for RM20 per box." She ignored me.

"....." I ignored back.

I thought those jelly mooncakes were very lovely. My mouth is watering to try for the taste.

I had have some jelly mooncake bought by my sis the other day and I kind of like it.

People try to be very creative to differentiate their mooncake as it is a very lucrative product. Mooncake is also kind of a food allow us to be very wild in innovation. Years after years, we see new products in the market. It has been a trend and excitement to look around who has created what new thing. I have not seen people explore other festive food like this yet.

Bravo to all the chefs and mummy out there!

Duanwu Jie... a date to give our heart out.

Today is Duanwu Jie or Dragon Boat Festival. We eat zongzi (Chinese rice dumpling) and we enjoy dragon boat racing. We offer friends our home made zongzi and we are happy because we like the special delicacy. But how many of us know the meaning behind each and every dumpling we eat?

Have time to take a look in Wikipedia: Zongzi?

Malaysia will be celebrating its 50 years of independent. We are glad that we have educations, jobs, plenty of foods and warm and friendly neighborhood. Although sometime we suffer sudden flood, day light robbery and deep night raper. But those are rare. "Compare to the worse country out there, we are still okay and we should not complain much."

People get hurt is because they are careless and unlucky. We should be thankful to have such a good place to live and should continue our routine as long as there is food and shelter?

It is hard to imagine if worse come to our country we will stand out and protect our nation. Can we feel our blood, which is so warm that even when it drains we still alive?

If you love your country why you run away to have your life? Or you are out there gathering enough to come back to serve us one day when you ready?

We never die for our nation but for the money we chasing.

I am half lost, Anak Malaysia.

Forget about the jam in KL, forget about the late evening rain here and forget about my life for a little while?
But will certainly not forget my favorite curry mee and Bak Kut Teh, laaa...

Valentine... Happy Day

Valentine... First thought must be a romantic dinner. Nice western cuisine, wine, cold place, etc. We have been badly affected by the commercial and influence of movie, magazine and TVs. Do you feel you had lost yourself?

I don't know you, but every year I had the same complain. Flower too expensive, food too expensive, wine too lousy, wasting time queuing up for a mass production, over prised "romantic" dinner.

Result? The girl seems happy just because there is a guy willing to "spend" for her. The guy, seems happy because the girl looks happy (although half of his monthly meal money gone). The restaurant owner, the happiest person that night. He suddenly wish every night should be Valentine.

So, this year I had slightly different occasion. We sung in Red Box. Free cakes, free drinks, plenty of songs, free pictures, plenty of foods, free CD, plenty of fun. Still a bit commercial, but at least slightly different from "use to" year. How about trying something different next year? Dare you? Ha ha...

Birthday Dinner @ Zen Sunway

I usually do not have big celebration. Simple dinner is enough for me to be happy. Only twice in my life I had a big party at house for my friends. I do enjoy my friends' wishes and loves. It just myth that to keep lower profile during birthday for a better year. Strange? I also thought so.

Last year it felt on the Chinese New Year day and I virtually had the entire world celebrate with me. This year it fall a bit earlier and I had to find some place to treat myself slightly better.

Japanese seems good. So, I went to this Zen Restaurant at Sunway Pyramid. A nicely built eating place with fantastic food. A good place to sit by the window and look at the street. A good place to sit comfort and enjoy some fine sashimi. A good place to make a wish for a better year a head. Good food, good life!

Forget what's these bean called already (hey, I am Chinaman, not Japanese laa), but I love it very much.

Sushi set dinner with udon soup. Nice.

Sashimi set. I felt like a cat eating those raw fish. enjoyable as it feel kind of healthy and I love wasabi.

Dong Zhi... Winter Solstice Celebration

The Winter Solstice Festival (Chinese: 冬至; Pinyin: dōng zhì; "The Extreme of Winter") is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians during the dongzhi solar term on or around December 21 when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest; i.e., on the first day of the dongzhi solar term The origins of this festival can be traced back to the Yin and Yang philosophy of balance and harmony in the cosmos. After this celebration, there will be days with longer daylight hours and therefore an increase in positive energy flowing in. The philosophical significance of this is symbolized by the I Ching hexagram (復, "Returning"). Traditionally, the Dongzhi Festival is also a time for the family to get together. One activity that occurs during these get togethers (especially in the southern parts of China and in Chinese communities overseas) is the making and eating of Tangyuan (湯圓, as pronounced in Cantonese; Mandarin Pinyin: Tāng Yuán) or balls of glutinuous rice, which symbolize reunion. Tangyuan are made of glutinuous rice flour and sometimes brightly coloured. Every one in the family receives at least one large Tang Yuan and several small ones. The flour balls may be plain or stuffed. They are cooked in a sweet soup or savoury broth with both the ball and the soup/broth served in one bowl.

Celebrating DongZhi and may the winter as sweet and lively as these TangYuan.

Party at house... so how's the foods?

Last weekend was my mum's bigday and we had a small party at house to celebrate it. Although it was not my original idea, but I had to contribute a bit to ensure her son did something.

As her son is well known in eating, we need to source the perfect food. Why are we not cooking? Because I believe we could not do it better than the professional one.

So, we source some great food around to pampered our guesses.

This KungPo sotong was from a shop near Glenmarie. I thought those sotong just die not longer than 12 hours, based on my CSI sensory test.

Noodle also obtained from the same shop and its really really long. Taste not bad, even after leaving for so long.

This is extremely hot spicy curry fish meat. You see the oil you know all those ladies never touch a single piece.

Prawn was great as well. Looks hot, taste very hot also.

This "Ahjak" was from LoongFoong in Paramount Garden. Our local "kimchi" I like more.

Well, you guys should recognized this duck. Yes, its from LoongFoong as well. This dish finish in 300 sec.

Please no not afraid about these chicken feet. Although the looks are not that pleasant, but I bet you will never stop after eating one. It melt in your mouth with very thick flavor.

I love this "lohbak" also. very well prepared and full of flavor. Not too salty not too oily. Both chicken feet and "lohbak" were source from a BohKutTeh shop in Kampung Subang (will review in detail, soon).

My mother said she felt embarrass if all the foods cooked by other people. So, she quickly went cooked some vegetables to dilute all those cholesterol and MSGs.

Finally, we should have a cake, mango cake from Secret Recipe. Mango is my favorite, and my mum's as well, and my sister, and all the guesses.

Thank you for your reading and blessing!

Cute little vegetable... Not for eat.

The reason I ventured into food technologist was I thought the world needs us to come up new ways to make our food last longer, tastier and can feed more people.

However, when I was in Cameron Highland, I saw those little melons (money fruits), which were not for eaten.

According to the store owner, those cute little melons are mend for display and decoration (and bring luck for money). They can last for about 2 years!

I think I had out from the food study & research area for too long. I am outdated already. I have no idea our biotechnology had gone that far.

Seriously, this is a great achievement. Long live, our biotech!

Ever seen a purple corn?

I can't believe what I saw in Cameron Highland market the other day. Purple corn.
Those corn looks damn pretty. Just like many tiny gem stone. I am sure you ladies must be loving it.

I bought a steamed one (plain, without butter or else) and took a few bites. Taste and texture totally different from our normal corn.

The store man told me that the species is cross breed between corn and glutinous rice (I am quite surprise that our biotech has advance to much!). So, you must not surprise that those things have glutinous rice color, shape like corn but taste like glutinous rice. Which means no taste, sticky and very starchy.

I do not think you will like it to be eaten just like that. Maybe we can use it for this coming May Festival to make "Zhongzi". Or, do it like what I did... Took some nice pictures and show it to friends and forget about eating it, again.

A Traditional Hokkian Dish for Spring Festival... Dried Bamboo Shoot.

Not many people know how to eat bamboo shoot. Or even heard of eating bamboo shoot. Yes, we eat bamboo, and we are not Panda.

According to Wikipedia, Bamboo: The shoots (new bamboo culms that come out of the ground) of bamboo, called zhú sǔn (竹笋) in Chinese, are edible. They are used in Asian stir fry, and are available in supermarkets in various sliced forms. However, the shoots of some species contain toxins that need to be leached or boiled out before they can be eaten safely.

This is raw bamboo shoots, just for your info.
